While this site focuses primarily on fashion trends, we thought we would look at some of the background of fashion and trends and just how they work.
While fads and fashion are two separate subjects, they hold some similarities that join them in interesting ways. Fashion is seen as the more important of the two. Its general nature is suggested by the contrasting terms “in fashion” and “outmoded.”
These terms represent a pattern of acceptance in peoples general consciousness, as well as a continuing change in social forms. Eventually fashion is replaced by more up to date models of aesthetic.
It is a general parade of social forms that sets fashion apart from custom, which is to be seen as established and fixed. The acceptance of just what is fashionable does not seem to come from any demonstration of utility itself, instead it is a response to the direction of sensitivities and taste.
